CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPES (Plein Air-Painted from Life

PLEIN AIR-PAINTED FROM LIFE
While living in Southern California, around 1982 I started to experiment with plein air (French for open air) painting at various locations around Orange County, such as fields around Irvine and in Laguna Canyon. Later, after moving to Duxbury, Massachusetts, I continued to paint on location and have done so everywhere I’ve lived up until now. For me the best way to learn color and composition is from nature. The late 19th century artists such as George Inness, the French Barbizon School, and the American Tonalists were of major influence as were the early California Impressionists and great teachers such as David Leffel and Richard Schmid.
