NINETEENTH CENTURY SUBJECTS

My earliest studies, art historical, were of the French Impressionists. I experimented with many oil techniques, the thick broken brushwork in the manner of Pissarro and Monet, inventing paintings in the style of those artists. I later copied paintings by Monet, Renoir, Mary Cassatt, and Degas out of various art books. Around 1980, I began to photograph friends in period costumes at various locations and also painted small color studies to further realize paintings evocative of that era.
